The Nigeria Police Force has earmarked N2 billion out of its 2013 budget of N319 billion for logistics, intelligence gathering and purchase of anti-terror equipment in order to step up the war against terror.

The Boko Haram insurgency is the most serious terrorism challenge facing Nigeria at this time.

Caleb Olubolade, the Minister of Police Affairs, said this in his presentation at the 2013 budget defence session before the House of Representatives committee on Police Affairs in Abuja on Monday.

He said that the budget would focus on completion of ongoing projects and complementing the funding of the operations of the police to facilitate a more efficient service delivery.

Mr. Olubolade said the budget would also target training in areas of emerging security challenges, particularly terrorism, necessitating the need to develop the capability of the force to respond appropriately.

Rep. Usman Kumo (PDP-Gombe), the Chairman of the Committee, said no amount was too much to be used in bringing terror attacks in Nigeria to an end.

“With what is happening now, we are left with no option than to give the police the much needed support to fight terrorism.

“They need more funding to enable them purchase sophisticated and latest equipment to enable them to protect lives and property of Nigerians and their offices and formations,’’ he said.

He said that terrorism could not be tackled with archaic and old method of crime fighting.
